We were finally free… to worry about keeping our legs in perfect condition or covering them up all summer long! Sorry, but I find hose to be far more freeing — it covers those little imperfections that I ALWAYS have on my legs. I don’t really like looking like I’ve been in a cage match recently, which I do with bare legs since I’m generally covered in bruises and scratches.

    My left leg from the back of the knew down is covered with varicose veins and it looks like an interstate map. I agree with formerlyAnon – wear my legs and then tell me how your confidence is doing. Try being 15 (when those veins first appeared on my leg) and living with them until middle age. It gets worse.

I’m with Jennifer. No Nylons!! I don’t want them back. It does not matter what size or kind, tights or nylons, the waist band rolls down and I spend the night adjusting and worrying about wether the crease that is digging into my tummy fat is visible.

    Not necessarily! I’ve yet to wear a pair of hose that fit correctly and didn’t roll down. They magically go from rolling down to completely falling down, with no correctly-fitting size in between.

      Thanks Meira, I am 44 and have worn nylons for years and have tried EVERTYTHING they don’t fit me ever. I am 5,2 and 130 lbs look at the chart on the package I am in no mans land. I’m willing to revisit thigh highs, altho I’ve not had much luck with those either , but my husband still likes them so there is some secondary benefit

  Snip the waistband in at least four places. Not all the way through, but almost. It will ease the squeeze at the top. I do this to all tights, too.

  Not to mention that if you’re not pale skinned, it is impossible to find pantyhose that don’t make you look like you painted your legs with a coat of Behr low-gloss enamel. In my high school formal photo my legs are an entirely different color from the rest of me, and that was after weeks of searching for a matching shade. Horror. Sheer off-black wasn’tterrible, but who wants to wear off-black hose in July besides Gaga? And as to hose saving you from having to keep your legs perfect, what about how smooth and perfect your feet and toenails have to be just to not snag the hell ot of the damn things?

    Hose seem to work for only a narrow range of skin colors. Those of us who are too pale also end up with legs a completely different shade than our top half, even in the palest non-snow-white ones they make. And like you, I don’t want to wear dark hose in summer! The return of hose is yet another trend I will be avoiding and hoping for the rapid demise of.

      They are hard to find, but if you are willing to splurge, Wolford makes a color called cosmetic in its Le 9 line — the hose are perfect for those of us who don’t want nurse legs….nor oddly tanned ones. The wolford’s actually last a long time, and I think they have a lot of cotton in the blend so they are also really comfortable.

      Also Falke do about half a dozen nude shades from very pale to dark. Likewise I’ve always found Falke’s last ages and the fit is usually good. For cheaper ones Pretty Polly Naturals come in about 3 nudes.

I’m with you Jennifer!! First of all, panty-hose never come anywhere close to my skintone. Second of all, I’m 5’10″ with a 35 inch inseam so I have to search high and low for the appropriate length (otherwise, I just have the crotch of it sitting at my thighs). And third of all, I hate having to worry about getting a run in them. And, hate to say it, but the sheer kind don’t REALLY hide that many “flaws.” YMMV, so I’ll speak for myself. Any hair or bruise or scar that is visible on my skin without the hose is still visible with them.

  Well, I can’t help with the other issues — I’m pretty sure there are only nine people alive who can find pantyhose that matches their legs — but as another tall, leggy person (5’11″ with a 36″ inseam), I figured I should share my tights/pantyhose purchasing secret with you.
  
  First, focus on finding pairs that are meant for taller people. Once you’re left with the ones that aren’t designed for people who barely come up to your shoulders, look for a weight range that is entirely above your weight. For example, if a pair says that it fits people who weigh 130-200 lbs, and you’re anywhere within that range, put it back. If the packaging has one of those grid charts that compares height and weight, look at the tallest height. Do this even if the maximum height is 5’11″ or 6’0″ because you have proportionately long legs (lucky you!). Once again, if you fit in the weight range designated for the tallest height, this is not the pair for you. When you find the right pair, the extra fabric that’s supposed to cover the thicker leg of someone larger than you will instead stretch downward to accommodate the extra couple inches of length.
  
  I’ve had good luck buying hosiery with a minimum suggested weight about 20-40 pounds higher than mine (above 40 lbs or so, the legs become too wide for me). However, my legs are pretty skinny, so if yours are more muscular, you may want to look for an even larger discrepancy. Good luck!

    Thanks for the advice! I generally stick to garters and etc. whenever I’m actually in need of the stupid things (pretty much only when I go to church with my grandma or my mother down South), but if I’m in a pinch I’ll keep this in mind. I simply hate having one more thing that is difficult to buy because of my height, so I’m hoping this doesn’t become “the thing to do” again. I’m ok not being on trend, but if it starts to be an issue at work…I’ll probably just wear pants lol.

Thigh high stockings IS going back. Stocking preceded panty hose by decades. Panty hose were an advance because they meant you no longer had to wear garters (which were in their day were a necessity, not a naughty lingerie choice). As for the gartlerless thigh highs with elastic, I haven’t tried them in years because in the past when I did, they didn’t stay up.

It doesn’t bother me if hose are a Do or a Don’t. I won’t wear them unless forced, but anyone else who wants to, knock yourself out. I never thought they looked bad, they are just so uncomfortable.

A relatively cute black dress (I don’t know what’s going on with the panel), cute shoes that a normal person would consider wearing (and that she can walk in without assistance), you can’t see any part of her ass cheeks, no face stickers or prosthetics. Yea, it’s a wig, but she always wears wigs. This is how she is going to shock people now.

I agree about the hose. I hate wearing it, and I can never find a pair that fit properly. I’m tall, have absurdly long legs, and am not skinny. Plus I usually can only get one wear out of them because the ones I can afford rip so easily.

  Yes! Once you find them for the right height, they are way too big around. I was never skinny, but I was never as big as the pantyhose manufacturers thought I should be. I usually bought L’eggs and they would rip if you turned around too fast.

I don’t hate sheer hose if they look right. They fit in with Gaga’s outfit perfectly. If the occasion is appropriate, I don’t have a problem with sheer hose. Honestly the way some of these celebs slicked up their legs, I was getting tired of the bare legs look. As long as manufacturers can come perfect the nude hose I’m okay. If I can find it I will wear nude, and I think black looks sexy. I’m still not wearing them everyday in 90+ weather, but to dress up, no problem.

As a gay man, I am glad to see the return of panty hose! I am tired of seeing woman in the office in flip flops and stubble covered bruised and blotched legs. It is not attractive to be riding up the esculator and having a pair of bare legs right in front of me. How would you women feel is I was there in front of you in shorts with my very hairy legs staring back at you? FLIP FLOPS are not acceptable office attire! I am on just this side of 30 and I still wear hose when I want more coverage/depending on the occasion. Sometimes I layer nude fishnets over nude hose, it’s actually pretty flattering and warmer (it’s gray and raining in the middle of July here). On the other hand, I was taught not to wear a black dress to a wedding unless it was formal evening dress, etc. and no one seems to follow all these little rules anymore …

It’s definitely one of her better looks. On the WOS mode, I wish i could post a picture right now. It’s 11 am in STL, I am at a family bakery/deli for lunch and there is a young woman wearing a very, very short, slightly sheer, off the shoulder black cocktail dress, no bra and super high silver strappy sandals with rhinestone embellishment. I see a lot of young women (I work on a college campus, have teenagers, & live in a town with lots of events with an “all-ages” appeal) and I have seen that look on retail saleswomen in trendy stores and as ‘ironic’ day wear by certain sub-sets of artists/musicians. In my office I’m required to wear hose if I wear a skirt (I know, evidently my office lives permanently in 1955) so I’m actually kind of happy that although I am forced to wear hose, I’m not also forced to be a complete fashion don’t against my will. I must be oddly out-of-touch because I never realized pantyhose were “out” in these parts. It’s the only part of cooler weather that I like. Anyways, when it’s hot and you have thighs and are wearing a shortish skirt to something formal, 10 denier hose keep your thighs from chaffing.

  In the UK tights are anything with two joined legs – from 7 denier to 70 We don’t use the term pantyhose at all. Thicker tights are just called opaque tights, or well, thick tights.
  
  The really vehemently anti-hosiery posts I’ve read have usually been American for some reason. Most people of all ages will wear opaques here in the winter and although most younger ones are bare-legged and fake-tanned, you do see some sheer tights with short skirts as well as fishnets, lace etc. More so on the fashion conscious, less so on the trashier types. And older women rarely go bare-legged with a skirt. And that’s the UK, mainland Europe seems to be far more hosiery friendly. But they seem to be treated as a bit of an outdated alien concept by a lot of US commenters. Of course I’m only going by various blogs and forums, there are always people who go their own way thank goodness

Sometimes I think it would be fun to parade through the airport like that…but then I remember I’m just going to end up in a pretzel position in my seat trying (and generally failing) to get comfy enough to sleep, so I usually err on the side of schleppy when I fly. I therefore envy Gaga’s super glam look here – even if she does drive me a little crazy with her never-ending “affectations” – must be exhausting!

If you dont like to bare your legs because of imperfection or radiating paleness and yu just need a quick fix: use some selftanner or tinted moisteriser. You can dilute the moisteriser with a bit of body lotion so it will go further. Using seltanner and tinted moisteriser at the same time means you can actually see where you used selftanner and what needs to be rubbed in better so you don’t get too many streaks.

Yes! Team Panty Hose! I luv you Gaga and Kate! Jennifer, honey, not all of us are in our 20s anymore. Baby #2 added to my already expanding patch of varicose veins. And with 2 toddlers I have zero time to lounge around tanning. So mommy’s white veiny legs need a little help and the self tanner did not do the trick.

I agree that GOOD QUALITY hosiery (stockings, thigh-highs, tights, etc) has never been out of style, and is an essential wardrobe component for civilized urban living — whether it’s for business, formal dress, or as a fashion statement. The bare legged of LA and Miami created an overzealous trend of overly-tanned, likely streaky, often inappropriately naked legs. Let’s face it — most women who go bare legged really shouldn’t.

Doubtful. I know when I’ve done a private plane flight, we were whisked through a gate via car to the hangar. No security. But that was a small airport Not sure if JFK, LAX and other big airports are the same though.

I have to say, and please don’t shoot me…..I LOVE hosiery. I think it’s amazing. I think it’s sexy. It hides a multitude of sins. I think too many women go with bare legs who have no business doing so. Every single ingrown leg hair pimple shows, the dry skin, uneven skin tone…not to mention the stinky sweaty feet syndrome that affects the shoes with no protective barrier. Let’s face it, the majority of women out here do NOT have perfect, shapely legs. But for some reason, they all seem to think that because something’s in style, they HAVE to wear it. Yuck. Many women need the blessing of hosiery. I have worn slacks for the last 15 years because there’s no WAY anyone wants to see my bare legs in a dress. As hosiery is deemed unfashionable, I settle for pants. Please GOD bring it back as a fashionably acceptable option.
