I’ve always liked the manlier sandals–not the ones that look like women’s sandals on steroids (the ones with the little toe rings, the ones in the very last photo). But two caveats: (1) If you’re going to show your toes, get a pedicure. Nobody wants to see your calluses, dirty nails, and fungus. And (2) Sandals with socks always look to me like the apotheosis of Dorkwear. And not in a good way. But that may be from too many years, growing up, of suburban dads in their plaid Bermudas, black socks, and clunky sandals. The first photo above is a convincing argument that socks and mandals can work together.

Mandals: Yea IF you take care of your feet. No need for an hour at the salon but keep them clean, nails trimmed and a little moisturizer every now and then wouldn’t hurt. I would love to see my husband in the following (taken from pics above): Versace, DSquared2 or the Lavin. I admit to wearing socks with Birkenstocks in the winter but I live in Seattle so I’m allowed. There are exceptions for almost everything…

I’ve never had a problem with men airing their tootsies. The Ann Demeulemeester pair made me laugh. But they are actually kind of an interesting take of men’s footwear. The Hermes pair of quite nice.

In the 60s my very handsome and suave uncle had a pair of Italian sandals (bought there) that had a lot of strange twisted bits of leather and a sort of flap that covered up the toes. I’m sure my Brooks Brothers dad (who never showed his feet outside the house that I can recall) thought they were fagelah as hell but I remember them as just the right combination of manly and attractive while also hiding the crusty nails etc. But Italians know their shoes, or they used to if these photos are any indication.

Socks with sandals are a strange European phenomenon that this American can’t get used to. But you do see plenty of very well-dressed good looking guys there doing it. Maybe it’s a When in Rome thing that just doesn’t travel well.

On the other hand when I walk my dogs I wear socks with Teva-ish sandals to prevent getting dog poo and mud on my bare feet and to keep bugs off, Is that allowed?

If you walk your dogs in a purely utilitarian spirit (you are not hoping to meet a romantic partner at the dog park) you’re fine.

It is also o.k. if your home burned down and all you have to wear on your feet are sandals and it’s below 50 F outside. At least until you can get somewhere to purchase a pair of actual shoes.

I love wearing sandals with socks, I’m not talking about athletic socks, but nice bright, thin, colorful ones, so YEA on that front. I personally don’t mind men in sandals, but I dislike the feminine looking ones. And I could care less if the men sporting them had a pedicure. A qualified YEA. In general, I never want to look at a man’s feet. If, however, he has a pedicure (just like a woman but without the blue toenail polish), he should be allowed to wear sandals (never flip flops) in certain limited places — at the beach or pool, in his own house or yard, in his own car (but only if he’s not getting out), and when leaving the nail spa after a pedicure. That’s it.

I think sandals can work on guys… but the mental image I’m getting is of a rough-and-ready biking-and-rock-climbing type of guy, wearing those very modern sandals made of rubber, nylon and velcro. That works. (Although, I might just enjoy thinking about a nice, toned, rock-climbing type of guy, to be honest.)

Other sandals? Hmm. Not sure about that. Definitely never with socks.

(However, I’ve been trying to talk the husband into sandals recently. So far he is resisting. Naturally I will go with him to supervise and ensure they are not ugly sandals. My reasoning has more to do with the weather than fashion, though; it’s 110 degrees here in Oklahoma and likely to stay that way for two more months. Sandals may not be ideal, but heat stroke is NEVER fashionable.)

I like men in jeans and sandals. That’s right, I said it. Give me a man in a well-fitting white t-shirt, jeans (that fit well, of course), and a pair of leather sandals, and I will happily ogle that man all day. As with so many looks, this depends on many factors: the mandal style in question, the man’s legs, the look in general and, of course, whether he takes care of his feet or is an average man with gnarly, broken nails of various lengths.

I think there may be a East Coast/ West Coast divide here. Except for the more impractically fashion-forward pairs, I have no problem whatsoever with sandals on men. In fact, I was a little surprised it was even under discussion, aside from the socks issue (put me down as a ‘nay’ on that one). yea, love my berks all year round (granted I live in CA). when it gets cold, orange and grey striped socks go on the feet with the birks. Fashion tragedy, yes; non-sweaty feet because of ventilation, oh yeah. I like TEVA’s too. I find that no one seems to make good flip flops for walking so I switched over. Also at this point I should also give you my gay card for socks with the berks, the violation for wearing sweats in public, and being comfortable. And to think I like well groomed men. lol

My husband has Keens, but they work. They actually get wet & muddy as the sandals are intended, also, they are never worn with socks. My whole gripe is that my husband’s feet on a daily basis, look better than mine do straight from the salon… They are smooth & soft & it’s just not fair.

Yes to sandals for men. No to portmanteaus opening with “man” (mandals, manny, et al). Yes to greater variety of sandals for men–I go to stores shopping for sandals with Arthur and there are 3 acceptable styles? That’s not fair. No to socks.

The only shape of straps I ever see in stores are ones similar to the Lanvin, the Vutton, the Missoni, and of course the John Richmond (yawn). I like the Acne, Dsquared2, Hermes, Ports 1961, and Vivienne Westwood.

A tentative YEA. Some of those sandals are just ridiculous, and (at least imo) the male foot holds little aesthetic appeal, but what alternative to the flip-flop, Hush Puppy and (gag) Croc is there?
