Yea or Nay: Brooke Shields’ Tobi Tobin Necklace

Brooke Shields attended New York City Ballet’s 2011 spring gala at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center wearing a Tobi Tobin necklace. Well, “necklace” might be a misnomer. It’s more like a flamboyant, ambitious scarf.

Wow. That’s kinda … something, isn’t it? Forgive our uncharacteristic reticence, darlings. We’re trying to figure it out ourselves. We’ll say this: at least she paired it with the right dress. It works fairly well with the one-shoulder neckline and you wouldn’t want to wear a colorful or sparkly dress with this thing, so the black was a good choice. It’s a head-turner, that’s for sure. But ultimately, we think it’s just too much. Feathers AND sparkles AND little fleurchons made out of Ace bandages? This is where we get off, kittens. But fortunately, we’re all about letting you have your say and since you had so very much to say about Tilda’s shoes yesterday (which were declared a YEA by the minions), we’re getting the band back together one more time:

Nay. There’s something gruesome about the bandage tone combined with the feathers, like roadkill.

I disagree about the dress; I think the same dress in a simple, bold jewel-tone would have offset those black feathers better and made them look less funereal.

Alright, because it looks better up close, I’m going to say Yea on the necklace because it’s adventurous and different, paired with a good dress. But a big ole NAY on the shoes. I know they are heels, but they manage to look like grandma shoes just the same.

Okay, unlike almost everyone who’s posted so far, I think THIS is a hard one. It’s an ugly piece on its own but in the right context on the right woman it could have a lot of dramatic impact (in a good way) where real jewelry might be a tad too . . . well, I can’t decide between formal or upscale, neither being the exact term.

But as you’ve said in another post, this is another woman’s necklace. It needs someone with carriage approaching that of Iman to lend grace and presence. The dress length & shoes and her linebacker stance combine to make her look far less graceful than she usually does. And while it may be different in person, I’ve never thought she had a lot of presence.

Out. Or rather, nay. But it wasn’t inevitable.

I really like it – it’s fun and different and it does indeed look great with that dress. The sparkle calls attention nicely up towards her face. The only thing I don’t like about this outfit are her shoes!

Wow, I’m a big YEA on this one. The NAY goes to what’s going on from the knees down. Knees up, doing fine. This is way to dip one’s toe into the crazy pool but not get completely soaked. nope. nay. it hides too much of her dress. make the “fleurs” piece shorter and narrower, put the feathers on the other side of the fleurs, turn the necklace sideways so that the “fleurs avec des plumes” sits on her collar bone (would need counterweight in back), and it might work a bit better (in my humble opinion).

Hate. Meanwhile, I just had a realization – how much better would BShields look if she thinned out her eyebrows a bit? For years every time I’ve seen a photo of her I’ve tried to put my finger on what was so…masculine about her and I assumed the hair color just didn’t suit her or she wasn’t aging well or something, but it’s totally the eyebrows! I rather like the necklace/scarf item, and give her extra points for “out-of-the-box” accessorizing, so IN. However, her hair is competing. It should have been done up. Or, better yet, maybe it’s time she had it cut…..at a certain point, women need to lose the long hair of youth, no matter how good, healthy, etc. the hair itself looks. It’s a rite of passage.

I’m sorry but I love the necklace itself. However, the way its worn here is completely worn and the entire symmetry of the outfit doesn’t work….. way out of balance. I can totally envision the necklace worn with a very simple, strapless, black or ivory gown – it would then become part of the dress. I do not care for one shoulder tops or dresses anyway. It’s a difficult look, for a lot of women, to pull off. On top of the dress being all wrong, the shoes are way to heavy for this dress. The necklace needs to be balanced with a very simple dress or gown. I believe it would take on a completely different look.

That is one horrible looking necklace/scarf thing! I can only imagine one of her kids made it with aluminum foil, band aid gauze, and well feathers to pull the horendous look all together!
