Scarlett Johansson for W Magazine

ScarJo is the latest in a long line of celebrities and models to be put through the “make her up like stars of yesteryear” editorial; this time, for W Magazine. It’s not the most original idea in the world, but credit must be paid for avoiding the cliches here. Oh sure, there’s a Dietrich, but we have to doff our hats (if we had them) in respect for doing her up like Giulietta Masina. That’s not one you see too often. She’s not the most electrifying model in the world, but this was a fun and eye-catching way to do her up.

I give them points for getting her to close her mouth and muster a facial expression as Buster Keaton. The Giulietta Masina look found a way to make her typical doughy moue interesting. Well done, W. Typical, ScarJo.

I like it! The clothes are fabulous and runway worthy on their own. But combine them together in a certain way and add stage makeup, and it takes you to a whole ‘nother world!

  Other than the eyebrows, not Dietrich at all. And why brown hair? Dietrich started as a redhead, went blonde, and eventually ended up platinum.

  or–lots of makeup. my exhusband {the first, the best} was the great originator of this rather unfabulous idea….. i’m fond of my first exhusband, but, you know, it looks really silly. foundation over eyebrows never really works.

Fun layout. I love the Sarah Bernhardt outfit and the nod to Giulietta Massina. The Keaton image didn’t work for me (cause I know his films inside/out). She’s all sad scowling, while Keaton wasn’t wasn’t dubbed “Stoneface” for nothing. Also, the hat is all wrong. He wore a porkpie, but this looks more like a boater. Oh well, I’ll recover.

  In real life I’m the acting editor* of the Keaton Chronicle – the quarterly publication of the Damfinos – so have been grinding my teeth about the straw boater too. Very happy for Buster to get so much attention though – my daily Google alert has been going bonkers…

I actually really like these – except for the Keaton. I’m a huge Buster Keaton fan and her expression is all wrong. Love the La Strada look, though.

the dietrich is so very off it would be unrecognizable w/o the caption.

perhaps it is time that someone acknowledged that, over decades, not only fashions change but the physical & facial structures of the people who wear them? & this would be nearly a century, scary as that sounds.

i dunno, my comment is not about scarlett johansson–she looks nice. prettier, but as off as misty rowe as marilyn monroe {aeons ago, if anyone remembers}.

ps. she does look better as giulietta masina, but thats cos the costume & cosmetics, such as they are, carry it. again, it’s not that she looks bad, she doesnt, just–jarring.

Huh. I hate the Sarah Bernhardt photo so much I can’t be fair. In the original of that pose, Bernhardt’s face is an entirely different thing, conveying so much more emotion – http://www.neh.gov/news/humanities/2008-11/Curio/SarahBernhardt.jpg. Plus my mental image of Bernhardt is so tied to her hair that it just doesn’t work for me if it doesn’t show.

Masina is wonderful in Nights of Cabiria. The scenes where she is picked up by the movie star crack me up. What a great little actress.

I LOVE this. It’s more daring than most beautiful young starlets would ever attempt, because she doesn’t look blazing hot in every picture, which is something she can certainly do. It’s nice to see something totally different from her, and it turned out beautifully, in my opinion.

Also, I’ve always had a wicked huge crush on Buster Keaton, and I literally ‘Awwwwwwe’d when I saw her pictures. That’s hard to do.

The Dietrich reminds me more of Gloria Swanson, and I bow to the Keaton experts’ damnation of the straw boater (and on top of that enjoyed Eclectic Mayhem’s “whilst”), but it’s a fun shoot—something a bit different–and I agree it’s a rarity to see a Giuletta Masina reference. I like the Bernhardt, too.

  What a fun layout. I groaned when I saw the Dietrich photo, assuming it was Johansson channeling yet another movie star/sex symbol from decades ago. It’s good to see a new take on the idea.

Nice expression in the Keaton photos, though I am no aficionado.

As to the rest, I can’t be fair, I dislike the Bernhardt photo so much. The original has
so much more emotion in the face:

The Marlene is the most obviously ScarJo. I applaud her and the team for stepping out-of-the-box a bit and being willing to not make her up to be a glorified version of herself. I don’t know anything about Keaton, but she looks totally unrecognizable, and they did a great job with her there. There really isn’t a whole lot in here to not like, IMO.

These are very well done, but I don’t understand the point. Is it Halloween? I’m not picking up any insight or commentary. It seems less like an homage than an exercise of Johansson’s willingness to take the standard starlet-as-classic-star shoot to its most pedantic extreme.

A bit different so I quite like them. I always think these type of shoots are just to give the make-up artists and stylists a bit of fun, and it’s good to see them pick people other than the usual Monroe, Hepburn, Brooks cycle.

Looks like they’ve got a bit of Keaton/Lloyd confusion going on though. And, even when Marlene Dietrich’s hair was darker it was never that dark.

I love these! I am a huge Scarlett fan, I think she is very talented and very sexy. My fave role of hers was in Woody Allens “Match Point”, a great film worth seeing again. I like the fact she was very willing to stretch into territory that most young Hollywood women won’t. That is being made up alomst unrecognizable and in man drag. Very striking.

They’ve got Scarlelett Johansson — a woman who very well could inspire magazines of the future to dress starlets to make them look like her for their gimmick photo shoots. That is, they’ve got the chance to actually take those iconic photos of ScarJo and instead W puts her in clown makeup. Fire the photography editor.

Quite original, not at all selections for the typical copy-shots. I think these shots, especially Buster Keaton, where her face is expressive, speak to her acting ability as well as her photogenic qualities.
