No, here is your villain:
His crime? Apparently everyone is mad at him for not standing up to the judges and saying “Me? I don’t deserve to win, for I have no talent. Give it to Ivy or Gretchen or someone far more deserving than I.”
Look, no one knows better than us how editing shapes the audiences perceptions of person and event, but if B/M had footage of Michael telling people to vote against Ivy, don’t you think they would have shown it? And if they didn’t have footage, why didn’t they?
Is Michael lying when he said he’d never do such a thing? Possibly, but his actions make us think he’s telling the truth. If you’re bad mouthing someone behind their back and you find out that they know you’re doing it, the very last thing you’d do is publicly confront them and publicly deny the charge.
No, what’s motivating this little workroom fatwa is the fact that Michael does not have the good sense to defer to to the more worthy designers, all of whom are in agreement that Michael is a poopy head and everyone hates him. We’ll get to the various principals throughout the week, but for once, Gretchen wasn’t the one who came off the worst. Ivy was. It’s one thing for another 2-time winner to throw up her hands and say “I don’t understand why this guy keeps winning.” It’s another to go on and on about how this guy doesn’t deserve to win when YOU YOURSELF HAVE NEVER WON ONCE. Worry about your own work, Ivy. Clearly it’s worth worrying about.
As for Michael’s work….
So yes, we think the judges, because they are jaded and cynical fashion bitches, got all excited because in terms of basic shape and style, Michael C really did produce the trendiest look out of all of them.
Lest you think we’re defending that decision, let’s just set this straight now: we think this dress, while incorporating some current trends, is downright ugly. The cap sleeves in lace are dowdy-looking and the skirt is simply too short.
Far be it for us to side with Gretchen, but she had a point when she complained about that. Yes, this is a design and not a sewing competition but it’s reasonable for a designer to think, based on the previous 7 seasons, that execution means a lot to these judges.
Still, we can’t really get too upset. This definitely would not have been our pick for the win and we definitely think people behind the scenes are making sure that the decisions produce the maximum amount of drama among the designers, but we can’t help it. The schadenfreude was flowing last night and watching bitchy Ivy and self-important Gretchen flail about trying to explain away why they’re not getting constant praise from the judges was DELICIOUS. So, CONGRATS TO MICHAEL C! We don’t love your dress but we love what you’re doing to those crazy bitches!
