Vogue has a great interview and editorial with our current favorite French person, Marion Cotillard.

“She gave her all to Piaf: ‘I learned how to make the space inside me for her to come in.” Along with hard work and intense research, there was mystical surrender and some mimicry—her brothers saw that she had copied their great-uncle’s walk for Piaf’s later years.

When the film was over, she couldn’t shake Piaf. Her hairline and her eyebrows were still shaved. She fled with Canet to Peru and the Amazon; she went to Bora Bora with her best friend, Geraldine. ‘It was there that I found myself articulating why Piaf was still living inside me. She had been abandoned as a child; her greatest fear was to be alone. Now I didn’t want to abandon her. I finally was able to say, “She’s been dead for 40 years; it’s OK.”

If you’ve never seen her Oscar-winning performance in La Vie en Rose, we cannot recommend it enough. It’s one of those performances that is so raw and so devastating, you watch it fearing for the actor’s sanity because there’s no way to give a performance like that without plumbing some mighty dark depths. We caught Nine last week and it sucked like the suckiest thing that ever sucked, but she was a charismatic highlight in a sea of suckiness.

But enough of that opinionating. Let’s look all flip through Vogue together and look at the pretty pictures.

Work that shit, poodle! She’s gorgeous; the clothes are gorgeous; the pictures are gorgeous. The French love their film sirens, and they usually pick one per generation to represent the country. Deneuve’s mantle is in good hands with this one. Fabuleuse.
